Tampere Tramway team finishes World TramDriver championship competition in 20th place
A team from Tampere Tramway took part in the TRAM World Championship 2025 competition, organized on Saturday, 13 September in Vienna. The team finished the contest that tested the skills of tram drivers in 20th place.
The World TramDriver Championship competition tested the drivers’ skills at tram driving, precision and focus. This was the first time the competition was held on a world-wide level, and the second time Tampere Tramway took part in an international tram drivers’ competition.
The Tampere team included tram drivers Maria Laitoniemi and Toni Rantsi as well as their supervisor and competition trainer Hanna Hurri. The three team members work at VR, the company responsible for traffic operation in the Tampere Tramway family.
– The competition offered a great opportunity to challenge ourselves and to learn something new. The atmosphere at the competition was exciting, and the tasks were demanding. I am very proud of our team who represented Tampere and Finland internationally, says Hanna Hurri.
European tram cities have hosted friendly competitions between tram drivers since 2012. This year, there were 25 teams from different parts of the world participating in the contest that was organized on a world championship level for the first time. The championship went to Austria.
– To qualify for an international competition is a great achievement as such. The Tampere Tramway team showed that we have top-level drivers who do their job with great skill and enthusiasm. This competition was a great opportunity to showcase the skills of Tampere drivers internationally, says Antti Haukka, Head of Operations of Tampere Tramway Ltd.
