The Tampere Tramway is being expanded in phases
The decision to build the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa tramway line of the Tampere Tramway was made on 21 October 2024, and construction began in December 2024.
In the first phase, the Tampere Tramway Pirkkala–Linnainmaa Alliance will construct tramway sections from Sorin aukio to Partola and from the Kauppi campus to Ruotula. The aim is to start tram services to these temporary terminal stops in August 2028. This phase will also include significant modification works at the Tampere Tramway depot located in Hervanta.
The implementation of the second phase is subject to securing state funding. In this phase (2028–2032), the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa Alliance is scheduled to build the sections from Partola to Suuppa and from Ruotula to Linnainmaa. Tram services to Suuppa and Linnainmaa could begin in early 2032.
Tram services on the first and second phases of the Tampere Tramway are in operation
In the first phase of the Tampere Tramway, tram lines were built from Pyynikintori to Hervanta and from the TAYS area to Sorin aukio between 2017 and 2021. Tram services on the first phase began on 9 August 2021.
Phase 2 of the tramway was constructed in stages from Pyynikintori to Lentävänniemi. Tram services on Phase 2A (Pyynikintori–Santalahti) began on 7 August 2023. Services on Phase 2B (Santalahti–Lentävänniemi) began on 7 January 2025.
The planning and construction of the sections were carried out by the Tampere Tramway Alliance. The construction work of the Tramway Alliance has been completed and the project has concluded.

Tampere Tram runs on two lines. Line 1 runs from Kauppi campus area (Tays hospital) to Pyhällönpuisto and line 3 runs from Hervantajärvi to Sorin aukio square.
