Tampere Tramway’s cars received their names

The results of the voting on tram car names was announced in conjunction with the Tramway Celebration held on 8 August. Tampere’s tram cars are named according to the day of their arrival and the names in the calendar for that day. Some of the cars were named based on that principle, but the public also had the chance to vote on the names for 12 cars, choosing from a group of 32 potential names. In conjunction with the Tramway Celebration, the audience was also able to vote on a name for the very first Tampere Tramway car.

A total of 8,350 different people voted on names for the Tampere Tramway cars. In conjunction with the Tramway Celebration, the audience was also able to vote on a name for the very first Tampere Tramway car. The proposed names were Lyyli and Lydia, with Lyyli taking the win. In order of arrival and starting from the first tram car, the selected names are: Lyyli, Valma, Saaga, Lempi, Iisakki, Visa, Helinä, Atro, Aava, Tellervo, Tuure, Kukka, Ritva, Ensio, Urho, Päiviö, Aliisa, Olga and Veera. Tampere will receive a total of 20 tram cars, the last of which arrives in September. The tramway builders voted on the name Hilla for the 20th car.

At this time, the only difference between the tram cars is their serial number, which are in the format TRO01. The TRO abbreviation comes from the name Tampere Raitiotie Oy (Tampere Tramway Ltd), which owns the cars.  From mid-August on, names will also be visible on the tram cars. They will be taped onto the lower edge of the cab using the Hervanta font. The same font is used in the literary art on the tram car windows.
